About the DILS
In 1971, the Department was established by Mr. Fang Tong-Sheng with the name of Department of Educational Media and Library Sciences. In 1991, the Graduate Institute of Educational Media and Library Sciences was established with two programs, which were multimedia education and library and information science.
In 1997, the Department of Educational Technology became an independent academic unit from the Department. In 2000, both the Department and the Graduate Institute were officially renamed as the Department and Graduate Institute of Information and Library Science.
In August, 2012, the Graduate Institute of E-Learning Executive Master's Program in Digital Publishing and Archiving was established. The advanced degree program welcomes working professionals for pursuing the graduate degree online. In August, 2020, the program was renamed as the Graduate Institute of E-Learning Executive Master's Program, Department of Information and Library Science
The DILS focuses on research and practices for collecting, processing, producing, saving, retrieving, and circulating information with an integrated and systematic approach; meanwhile emphasizes on theoretical discussions, field research, new media and technologies.
In response to current developments and information services in "digital libraries," the DILS provides profound training on the core of the field, including classic library related theories and practices as well as the use and retrieval issues for online resources, meanwhile offers students with well-grounded understanding and knowledge of digital libraries in breadth and depth.
With the support of teaching, academic research, and administration, the DILS aims to equip students with critical thinking skills and rich hands-on experiences. Upon graduation, our students not only can systematically and scientifically search, process, produce, and use all types of information, but are capable of generating innovative ideas, making well thought out decisions, and expressing his/her opinions logically.
In addition to delivering the essence of library science, the DILS puts great emphasis on courses related to digital libraries, multimedia, and computer science, which link closely to social informatics. Our curriculum is designed to help students flourish from effective learning practices. With full confidence, we are proud to say this is a discipline with tremendous potential!
