The Department of Information and Library Science (DILS) offers a variety of student events, including summer alumni tournaments and a series of events in the fall, such as teatime with freshmen and welcome parties to help incoming students settle smoothly on campus. In the middle of the semester, key leaders of the Department Student Association make heartwarming cards to celebrate Teacher’s Day and Mid-Autumn Festival with faculty members. In December, Christmas Gifting would last for a couple of days, which give students opportunities to show appreciations by stuffing cards and candies in Christmas stockings that are hung from the ceiling of the hallway outside of the department office. Everyone has a Christmas stocking with his/her name on it! In the following June, the Department hosts a graduation ceremony that sends off our graduates with good wishes in a rather personal and warm manner.

In order to provide venues for students to show their accomplishments throughout the school year, the College of Liberal Arts hosts a “Literature Week” each May; around the same period of time, the Department also hosts a “DILS Week.” In addition, the Department collaborates with the University and 7 information related departments on Tamsui campus to host an “Information Week.” All these professional events, whether by organizing or by attending, help students better prepare themselves for future career in related fields.

For scholarly activities, graduate students constantly work on research projects with advisors. The Department also strongly encourages our undergraduates partake in research projects. Faculty members would lead a number of undergraduates individually who show interests in research to apply for research grants offered by the government. By working on research projects early on, undergraduate students get to taste the flavor of doing research and often motivate them to continue the scholarly journey in graduate schools.

For student competitions, we believe all students can shine individually and as a team. The Department faculty advises and works closely with students to compete both on and off campus, including student club competitions, e-book design competitions, excellent teaching awards, outstanding thesis awards in the field of library and information science, etc. The fruitful results bring rich and memorable learning experience and enrich the student life with DILS.
